Few places capture the spirit of outdoor adventure quite like Potter County, Pennsylvania. Known as the heart of Pennsylvania’s Wilds, the county is famous for its vast forests, winding mountain roads, star-filled skies, and abundant recreational opportunities. Among its greatest attractions today is its expansive ATV trail system, a network that has transformed the region into one of the premier riding destinations in the Northeast.

The history of ATV riding in Potter County began with the development of designated trails within the Susquehannock State Forest. For years, outdoor enthusiasts traveled to the area to enjoy miles of legal riding opportunities through some of Pennsylvania’s most scenic landscapes. As interest in ATV recreation continued to grow, local communities, state officials, and outdoor organizations recognized the potential for something much larger.

That vision became reality in 2020 with the launch of Pennsylvania’s Northcentral Regional ATV Trail Connector Pilot Program. Designed to connect existing trails, state forest roads, township roads, and designated state highways, the project created a network that allowed riders to travel between communities while exploring the beauty of Potter County and beyond. The trail system quickly became a success, drawing visitors from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states while providing a significant economic boost to local businesses.

For many visitors, the trail system is simply a recreational destination. For our family, however, it became something much more.

In 2021, my husband Rodney and I purchased a log home on five beautiful acres outside of Galeton. We immediately fell in love with the peaceful setting, the mountain views, and the close-knit community that makes Potter County so special. What we soon discovered was that the ATV trail system was not only an attraction—it was a way of life.

The trails provided us with a unique way to experience our new home. Rather than simply driving through the countryside, we could immerse ourselves in it. Weekends became opportunities to explore hidden scenic overlooks, visit small towns, and discover parts of Potter County that many visitors never see. The trail system connected us not only to the landscape but also to the people who call this remarkable region home.

The economic impact of the trail system is evident throughout the county. Riders support local restaurants, campgrounds, hotels, gas stations, and small businesses. Communities such as Galeton have benefited from increased tourism, helping to sustain local economies while preserving the rural character that makes Potter County so appealing.

Today, the Northcentral Regional ATV Trail system encompasses hundreds of miles of interconnected routes throughout north-central Pennsylvania. What began as a pilot program has evolved into one of the largest connected ATV riding networks in the eastern United States. Yet beyond the statistics and economic studies lies something even more important—the memories created along the way.

For our family, the trails have become part of our story. They have given us countless opportunities to explore, connect with nature, and appreciate the incredible beauty that surrounds us. Every ride offers a new adventure, a new view, and a renewed appreciation for the place we are fortunate enough to call our second home.

Potter County’s ATV trail system is more than a collection of roads and trails. It is a gateway to adventure, a driver of economic growth, and for families like ours, a source of cherished memories that will last for generations.
